N5, moving toward N4

You have built a strong foundation in basic conversation and practical daily topics, now moving into more complex expressions like giving directions, wants, and intentions. You're starting to combine learned patterns for more natural speech. Your challenge is refining accuracy with verb forms and particles, especially in new patterns.

Keeps coming up

よん じ です か。 (yon ji desu ka)→よ じ です (yo ji desu)

  • Particle● still there

    えいが を 見ます でした。 (eiga o mimasu deshita)→えいが を みました (eiga o mimashita)

Working on now

  1. 1Using the correct particles (で de, に ni, を o) in sentences about location and direction
  2. 2Mastering verb forms for past, negative, te-form, and たい (tai) / つもり (tsumori) structures
  3. 3Describing preferences, plans, and wants in everyday contexts
  4. 4Conversational skills for practical situations like shopping, eating out, and giving directions

Getting better

  • Your use of polite request structures like て ください (te kudasai) has become more natural and accurate by lesson 7.
  • You now form past and negative verb/adjective sentences correctly, as shown in lessons 5 and 6.
  • You handle sequencing and describing routines smoothly, linking actions with それから (sorekara) and the て-form.

Bring to your next lesson

  • Ask your teacher for more focused practice distinguishing で (de) and に (ni) when talking about locations and directions in sentences.
  • Try to make several sentences using たい (tai) and つもり (tsumori) together—ask the teacher for feedback on the nuances.
  • Start your next class by sharing a recent shopping or restaurant experience in Japanese, using new counters like まい (mai) and ぞく (zoku).

Se met à jour tout seul après chaque leçon.

We spent the hour on contrast — although, even though, though — and then took it into the restaurant scene you asked for. You reached for although three times unprompted, and put it in the right half of the sentence twice.

The corrections below are nearly all about where the clause sits: although opens one of the two halves, it never stands between them the way but does. Worth a slow read before the homework.

Main corrections

although joins two halves — only though can be left at the end of a sentence

agree is a verb on its own in English, so it takes no am

since + a starting point takes the present perfect, not the present

explain never takes the person straight after it — the thing first, then to me

1. Although: two ideas, one sentence

We started from the sentences you wrote last week and joined them up, one pair at a time.

  • — in spite of the fact that
  • — a stronger although — when the contrast is a surprise
  • — the same, and the only one that can sit at the end

Contrast first, result second — the order that sounds most natural.

Pattern: Although + [clause], [clause].

Note: although and but do the same job, so one sentence never needs both.

  • — in spite of the fact that — although it rained, we walkedB1
  • — a stronger although, for a contrast that surprisesB1
  • — to have none left — we ran out of breadB1
  • — what you pay at the end of a mealA2
  • — to reserve a table in advanceA2
  • — good enough to justify the cost or the effortB2

Homework

  • Write five sentences about your week using although, and one with even though.
  • Read the six words out loud twice. The stress on although lands on the second half: al-THOUGH.

What to take from this one

You caught two of your own mistakes today before I said anything — that is new. Next lesson we take the same contrast into writing: a short review of somewhere you liked but would not go back to.

Comment ça marche

Trois étapes, une seule fois.

1
